Do Solar Panels Work Through a UK Winter? Honest Seasonal Output

Short answer: yes, solar panels work in a UK winter — they run on daylight, not heat, so a cold clear day is actually fine for them. But "they work" and "they earn their keep in December" are two different claims, and it's the second one that decides whether solar pays for you. This guide lays out what a typical 4 kWp system actually generates through the seasons, why winter is so much thinner than summer, and how to plan around it without kidding yourself.

The seasonal reality: same panels, very different output

A well-sited UK solar array generates a wildly different amount month to month. The physics is simple: shorter days, a lower sun angle and more cloud all cut the energy hitting your roof. Summer days can be five to ten times more productive than the worst winter days.

For sizing, the industry rule of thumb is annual yield per kWp installed. In the UK that averages around 850 kWh per kWp per year, though it varies by region:

So a 4 kWp system in the Midlands might produce roughly 3,400 kWh across a full year. The catch is when. The bulk of that arrives April–September. December typically delivers only a small single-digit percentage of the annual total — a fraction of a peak-summer month.

What a 4 kWp system does in December

On a bright, crisp December day, a south-facing 4 kWp array can still produce a useful chunk of electricity for a few hours around midday — enough to run background loads and top up a battery or hot water. On a dull, overcast December day, output can fall to a trickle: enough to cover your fridge and standby loads, not much more.

None of this means the panels are broken. It means solar is a system that pays for itself over a full year — carried by the summer, coasting through the winter.

Here's the catch: winter is where the payback maths gets tested

The value of solar comes overwhelmingly from self-consumption — using your own generation instead of buying at the grid unit rate (the pack cites around 24.67p/kWh as a typical capped rate, but read your own bill, as the Ofgem cap resets quarterly and many people are on fixed or smart tariffs). Typical self-consumption savings land somewhere around £400–£700 a year for a household.

The problem: your electricity demand is often highest in winter (lights, heating pumps, more time indoors) exactly when generation is lowest. So winter contributes the least to your savings while your bills are at their worst. If your household is empty all day in summer but full in the dark evenings of winter, a lot of your summer generation gets exported cheaply while your expensive winter demand still comes off the grid.

This is precisely why solar doesn't pay equally for everyone. A daytime-occupied home, or one with an EV, heat pump or battery that can soak up midday generation, gets far more value than a house that's dark and empty until 6pm. For some households, honestly, the numbers are marginal — and that's a legitimate answer, not a failure.
