Is Solar Worth It in the UK in 2026? What a 4 kWp System Really Saves

An independent, no-strings look at what a typical 4 kWp home solar system actually saves in 2026 — with 0% VAT, SEG export, self-consumption and honest payback maths.

Short answer: for many UK homes, solar in 2026 is a reasonable long-term investment — but not the slam-dunk the ads suggest, and for some households it won't pay back within a sensible timeframe. We install nothing and refer you to nobody, so here's the honest arithmetic on a typical 4 kWp system.

What a 4 kWp system actually generates

A 4 kWp array is a common size for a UK semi or detached home — roughly 10 panels. As a rule of thumb, the UK generates about 850 kWh per kWp per year, so a 4 kWp system produces around 3,400 kWh a year. That varies a lot by location:

That's the first honest catch: the same panels on a Cornish roof and an Aberdeen roof produce meaningfully different returns. Orientation and shading shift the numbers again — a north-facing or heavily shaded roof can undermine the whole case.

Where the money comes from: self-consumption vs SEG

Solar saves you money two ways, and they are not worth the same.

1. Self-consumption — every kWh you use in your own home avoids buying grid electricity. Under the current Ofgem price cap the typical unit rate is 24.67p/kWh (read your actual bill — many people are on fixed or smart tariffs that differ). So each self-consumed kWh is worth roughly a quarter of a pound.

2. Export (SEG) — surplus you don't use is sold back under the Smart Export Guarantee. SEG rates are retailer-set and volatile, currently ranging from about 4p to 16.5p/kWh. For example, Octopus Outgoing (flat) has paid around 12p, while a standalone SEG rate can be as low as 4.1p. Verify the current rate before you count on it — these change with 30 days' notice.

The key insight: a self-consumed kWh (worth ~24.67p) is roughly double to six times the value of an exported kWh. Solar pays best when you use your own power — which is why daytime occupancy, or a battery/timer to shift usage, matters so much.

The pack puts realistic self-consumption savings for a home system at £400–£700 a year. That's the figure to anchor on — not the generous "generation value" some quotes quietly assume you'll export at premium rates.

The costs — and the 0% VAT window

A 4 kWp install typically costs £6,500–£9,500 (residential solar PV is at 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, batteries included). That VAT relief is genuinely valuable and time-limited — but it's not a reason to rush into an oversized or poorly-sited system.

There is no general solar grant for a typical household in 2026. The Warm Homes Plan can fund solar, but only for low-income owner-occupiers, private renters or social housing — income and tenure based. Don't assume you qualify. Your installer must be MCS-certified to claim SEG at all.

Honest payback — and when it doesn't pay

Take the middle of the range: a £7,500 install saving £550 a year gives a payback of roughly 13–14 years. A cheaper £6,500 system saving £700 (south-facing, high daytime use) pays back nearer 9–10 years. Panels typically last well beyond that, so the back half of the system's life is largely free electricity — which is why solar can still make sense as a long-term hold.

Here's when it might not pay for you:

Adding a battery (also 0% VAT until March 2027) can lift self-consumption and unlock premium export/import tariffs — but batteries cost £3,500–£5,000 for 5 kWh and pay back over 7–12 years on their own. That's a separate decision, and the case is entirely tariff-driven. Don't let a battery be bundled in without its own numbers.

How to check it properly

Before you sign anything, work out: your actual unit rate and standing charge (from your bill, not the cap), your realistic daytime self-consumption, your roof's true yield, and the specific SEG rate you'd get today. Note that systems above 3.68 kW per phase need a G99 DNO application and may be export-limited — a 4 kWp single-phase system usually sits under the simpler G98 notify-within-28-days route.
