Solar in the UK: Do You Actually Need a Battery? When Storage Pays on a Smart Tariff — and When It Doesn't

You've got solar (or it's on the way). A battery is the obvious upsell — but the numbers only stack up under specific conditions. Here's the honest version.

Almost everyone who installs solar in the UK gets offered a battery in the same breath — often as a bundle that quietly adds several thousand pounds to the bill. Sometimes it's a genuinely good call. Sometimes it's the most expensive part of the quote doing the least work. The honest answer depends far more on your electricity tariff than on your panels, and that's the bit the sales conversation tends to skip.

What a battery actually does for you

A home battery earns its keep in three ways, and it's worth being clear which ones apply to you:

Notice that only the first of these is really about solar. The other two are about the grid and your tariff — which is why a battery can pay for some households who barely have panels, and fail to pay for others with a big array.

The self-consumption case (the weakest one on its own)

Here's the uncomfortable maths. Solar self-consumption saves you roughly £400–£700 a year in our knowledge pack for a typical install — but that's the whole solar benefit, most of which you already get with panels alone. A battery only captures the extra evening slice you'd otherwise have exported.

Every kWh you store and use yourself instead of exporting is worth the difference between your import rate (around 24.67p/kWh at the current typical Ofgem cap — check your actual bill) and your export rate. If you're on a flat export tariff paying around 12p/kWh, that gap is real but modest. If you're on a low standalone SEG rate of around 4.1p/kWh, storing solar is much more valuable than exporting it.

Here's the catch. Indicative installed battery costs sit around £3,500–£5,000 for 5kWh and £6,500–£9,000 for 10kWh, with a typical payback of 7–12 years. If self-consumption is your only reason, you're often at the slow end of that range — and battery cells degrade over time. Solar panels routinely outlast their payback comfortably; a battery's payback and its warranty life can be uncomfortably close together.

Where a battery genuinely earns its keep: smart tariffs

The strongest case is tariff-driven. On a smart tariff with a cheap overnight window — Intelligent Octopus Go advertises around 7p/kWh overnight (verify current rate), and legacy Economy 7 gives you roughly seven cheap night hours — you can charge the battery when power is cheapest and discharge it across the pricey daytime and evening peak.

On a peak import rate near the cap, shifting even a chunk of your daily usage from ~25p to ~7p is a meaningful per-unit saving, every day, all year — sun or no sun. Add a solar diverter sending surplus PV to your hot water cylinder and you've squeezed most of the value out of the system.

The premium export angle matters too: Intelligent Octopus Flux is a time-of-use export tariff (peak 4–7pm) that requires a battery and pays the highest export on the market. If you can fill a battery cheaply overnight and export at the peak-price window, the battery is doing arbitrage in both directions. SEG rates across the market currently span roughly 4p to 16.5p/kWh — a huge range that can make or break the case, so confirm the exact current figures before trusting anyone's payback claim.

When a battery probably won't pay for you

Be honest with yourself about the following. A battery is likely a poor investment if:

One genuine sweetener: 0% VAT applies to home batteries, including standalone retrofit, until 31 March 2027. That helps the maths — but 0% VAT on a purchase that doesn't pay back is still a purchase that doesn't pay back.

Get those four right and the answer usually reveals itself. A battery paired with a well-chosen smart tariff can be one of the better home-energy decisions you make. A battery bolted onto a flat tariff "because you've got solar" often isn't.
